Shireland Biomedical UTC has achieved the Inclusive Attendance Bronze Award, recognising its commitment to creating an inclusive learning environment where students are supported to engage fully with their education and the specialist opportunities available to them.
The award was presented during a Trust-wide Inclusive Attendance Conference, held at the new Shireland Training Centre in Oldbury. The event brought together academy leaders and attendance teams from across the Trust to celebrate progress, share learning and look ahead to the next stage of the Inclusive Attendance Standard.
The Inclusive Attendance Standard is a professional development programme designed to help schools build a culture where attendance is recognised as a shared responsibility across the whole school community. The Bronze Award is the first stage of the programme and recognises schools that have demonstrated a clear commitment to inclusive attendance through reflection, implementation and evidence-informed practice.
At Shireland Biomedical UTC, the development journey has provided an opportunity for staff to reflect on how attendance supports students to access the specialist education and experiences that prepare them for happy, successful futures.
Through its specialist curriculum, practical learning opportunities and links with employers and industry, the UTC provides students with opportunities to develop the knowledge, skills and confidence needed for the next stage of their education and future pathways. A consistent and inclusive approach to attendance helps ensure students are able to take full advantage of these experiences.
Following this achievement, Shireland Biomedical UTC will now progress towards the Silver Award stage of the Inclusive Attendance Standard, continuing to strengthen its approach to supporting students and families.
School Principal, Gulfam Shahzad, said: “Every day at Shireland Biomedical UTC gives our students the chance to develop their knowledge, build relationships and take part in experiences that connect their learning to the real world. Those moments are an important part of helping young people understand their potential and the pathways open to them.
“Our approach to attendance is about understanding the value of those experiences and ensuring students feel connected to the community they are part of. When young people feel supported, challenged and inspired by their learning, they are more likely to engage positively and make the most of the opportunities in front of them.”
